If your cell phone is stolen or lost, your cellular service provider will give you a new Sim card to use on your new phone.
However, some criminals have found a way of stealing from you using your Sim card. Yikes!

One sign that your phone number has been ported is that it instantly changes to Emergency Service Calls Only.
If you notice that, then call your cellular service provider straightaway.

Here’s how phone porting scam works…
With stolen personal details, the criminal will contact your cellular provider claiming that your phone has been lost, damaged or stolen and you need to use a new sim card on your new phone.
If they succeed in answering the security questions, your old Sim card will be deactivated, and the fresh card on criminals hand is activated.
Criminals use your details to switch your phone number to a new carrier.
They can later use your number to intercept messages.
That may include the two-factor authentication code sent by banks to confirm the identity of their clients when they want to access their bank accounts online.
How to Fight Phone Porting Scams
The good news is that you can mark yourself safe from port-out scams by taking necessary measures to safeguard yourself from fraud and identity theft.
If you suspect that your phone number has been ported, then you need to contact your cellular service provider immediately and change your security questions or PIN

Crucial Tips To Protect Yourself From Phone Porting Scams
Here are some precautions that you can take to prevent or stop Phone porting scams with major cellular service providers:
AT&T: AT&T advises its clients to include stringent security measures such as two-authentication codes to their wireless accounts.
MetroPCS: Call 1-888-8Metro8 if you spot any port-out scam.
You can also alter your security question or PIN by contacting customer care or logging in to your account.
T-Mobile: T-mobile is always advising its clients to regularly update their passcode/new PIN.

You can also reach out to their customer representatives at 1-800-937-8997
Sprint: clients can change their PIN by logging in to their account and selecting the preferences tab.
If you don’t remember your pin, then you can recover it by answering the security question when calling at 1-888-211-4727.
Verizon: You can alter your four digits PIN by calling Verizon at 1-800-922-0204 or change it online by visiting vzw.com/ PIN.
Extra Security Measures You Can Take
Inform your bank about the phone porting scam ordeal to help them take necessary steps to prevent criminals from accessing your bank account.
If you have not contacted your financial institution, it’s advisable to freeze credit on your bank account.
