Early life

Andre Romelle Young, famously known as Dr Dre, was born in Compton, California on the 18th of February 1965. Theodore Young and Verna Young, his parents, got married in 1964, separated in 1968, and got divorced in 1972.

Dre was raised in a musical family. Both of his parents were vocalists. Just before Dre was born his mother, left the Four Aces. His father Theodore was a member of the band known as the Romells, which is where Dre got his middle name.

After the divorce, his mother remarried to Curtis Crayon and gave birth to three children: Shameka, Tyree, and Jerome. Tyree and Jerome are both deceased.

Andre initially enrolled at Vanguard Junior High School in Compton, but owing to the increase in gang violence, he changed to Roosevelt Junior High School, which was located in a secure area.

Later on, Dr Dre demonstrated an aptitude for drafting while attending Centennial High School, but he paid little attention to his other coursework. After changing schools, he attended Chester Adult School after transferring to Fremont High School. By then, he was more interested in making music than in academics.

In 1984, Dre’s family gave him a music mixer for Christmas, and he quickly converted their house into his studio. He would use fragments of many songs and sounds to create his own sound for hours on end.

Dre began frequenting the Los Angeles nightclub Eve After Dark, where he ultimately had the chance to operate the turntables and became a DJ under the stage name, Dr. J, based on the nickname of his favorite NBA player Julius Erving. Andre then joined the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, which often performed in nightclubs at the time.

He later changed his stage name to Dr. Dre, a mix of Dr. J and his first name, Andre.

Career

Dr. Dre started  his career when he teamed up with fellow rappers Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Yella, MC Ren, the Arabian Prince and the D.O.C. to form N.W.A. (Niggaz With Attitude) in 1985.

He was able to create a harder-hitting sound with this new gangsta rap group. The beginning of N.W.A’s fame was fueled by their harsh and graphic lyrics that reflected life in the streets and helped to establish the well-known West Coast G-Funk subgenre.

NWA

Their first album of the American hip hop group ,’Straight Outta Compton’ was released in 1988, peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 1.5 million copies in the United States, certifying it three times platinum. One of the songs on the album, “F*** the Police,” sparked some controversy. The song, which examined hostilities between Black youth and the police, was perceived as encouraging violence. Even Ruthless Records and its parent firm received a letter of caution from the FBI regarding the song.

N.W.A. then released their second album two years later which went platinum and peaked at number one on the Billboard 200.

After the N.W.A split up in 1991, Dr. Dre established his first record company, Death Row Records, together with Suge Knight, the D.O.C. and Dick Griffey and the label represented artists like 2Pac and Snoop Dogg. Later in 1992, he released his first album under Death Row Records, named The Chronic and it made him best selling rapper in America.

The album’s lead track, “Nuthin but a ‘G’ Thing,” which featured Snoop Dogg at the time, was very popular. Dre contributed to the development of G-funk, which combined gangsta rap with musical samples and funk melodies, with this most recent album. Dre had always been a fan of the music of groups like Parliament and Funkadelic.

Dre founded Aftermath Entertainment, a division of Interscope Records, in 1996 after leaving Death Row Records. This label has collaborated with A-listers like 50 Cent, The Game, and Busta Rhymes and represented artists including Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, and Silk Sonic.

In 1999, Dre released 2001, his second solo album. The song was a smash on the hip-hop and pop charts, selling millions of copies. In the years that followed, Dre teased his audience by teasing the release of his third album, Detox. Despite the album’s tracks being leaked, Detox was never released because the project was constantly postponed.

Dre initially faced criticism for signing white rapper Eminem, but he quickly disproved the naysayers. He worked on most of Eminem’s successful albums, including The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) and The Slim Shady LP (1999). Dre collaborated with 50 Cent on his 2003 breakthrough album, Get Rich or Die Trying.

In 2006, Dre launched his own headphone company, Beats by Dr. Dre, with Interscore Records founder Jimmy Iovine. He introduced the company’s audio line with the massively successful Beats by Dr. Dre Studio headphones, which were followed by other successful items that were supported by pop and hip-hop artists.

Beats By Dre

Also introduced in January 2014 was the internet music streaming service Beats Music. Moreover, the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology, and the Business of Innovation was funded by the two partners.

In 2014, Apple acquired the company for $3 billion. Jimmy and Dre each received $750 million pre-tax from the acquisition since they each owned 25% of Beats by Dre at the time of the sale.

Beats by dre lawsuit

In 2014, a former hedge fund manager by the name of Steven Lamar filed a lawsuit against Dr. Dre and Iovine on the grounds that he was being denied royalties despite developing the concept of celebrity-endorsed headphones for Beats Electronics. Lamar’s contributions were accepted by the defense, but they maintained that he was only entitled to profits from the initial type of headphones.

The lawsuit was reopened in an appeals court the following year after a judge dismissed Lamar’s claims in June 2015, and in June 2018 a Los Angeles Superior Court jury determined that Beats owes Lamar an additional $25.2 million in royalties.

Awards

Compton, Dr. Dre’s most recent album, was released in 2015. He has received the Producer of the Year award, 2014 BET hip hop awards and six Grammy Awards including Best Solo Performance and Best Rap Performance. He also took part in the movies Set It Off, The Wash, and Training Day, hip hop’s first billionaire

Personal life

Andre’s first married Cassandra Joy in 1981 and he had his first son with her, Curtis Young that same year. They went their separate ways and he married his second wife Jenita porter, with who he had a son Andre Young Jr. Andre Jr. passed away in 2008 of a drug overdose.

Dr Dre also dated Michel’le, well-known American RnB singer and songwriter from 1987 to 1996. He had yet another son with her named Marcel in 1991.

He then got hitched once again with Nicole Young Plotzker and they were married until around June of 2020 when Nicole asked for a divorce. A court case was held where a divorce settlement was reached and Dr. Dre agreed to pay Nicole $100 million.

Trouble with the law

Over the years, Dre has had numerous brushes with the law. He allegedly struck TV anchor Denise Barnes in 1991 and attempted to shove her down some stairs. Dr. Dre was charged with assault and was the subject of a civil lawsuit as a result of his acts, but both parties opted to settle out of court. The attack was precipitated by a segment she had produced regarding Ice Cube’s separation from N.W.A.

The civil case led to various other women coming out about his violent acts towards them in the 90s and this caused quite a stir. Dre later addressed his past actions in different interviews apologizing and claiming that he now knows better.

The next year, Dre was accused of assaulting producer Damon Thomas. A few months later, he was detained for violence towards a police officer.

When Dre led authorities on a high-speed chase in 1994 while intoxicated, it appeared that he had taken his reckless conduct to the limit. Dre was handed a jail term of several months and was also required to pay a fee since he had broken the terms of his probation for the prior battery incident. He finished his sentence in 1995.
