What is Google AdSense?
Google AdSense is a program that enables you as a website owner to display ads on your website and earn money from them. When your visitors click on the ads, you will receive a portion of the cost per click (CPC).
Google AdSense connects you to advertisers and then Google serves targeted ads to the websites as per the interests. The ads are displayed in different formats and sizes, which enables you to customize how they appear on your site.
The amount of money you earn per click is based on a number of factors such as the advertiser’s bid, the quality and relevance of the ad, and the type of visitor that is viewing it.
Google AdSense provides a number of monetization options that we will explore later.
Overall, Google AdSense gives you a convenient way of making money online without having to create and sell products or services.
How Google AdSense Works
The first step is to sign up for Google AdSense in order to start using their services. Once that’s done, they will ask you for some basic information about yourself before giving you access to a dashboard from where you can manage your account.
The dashboard offers you a convenient place to customize the types of ads that appear on your site and the locations they will appear in. It is from here that you can also observe detailed statistics about the performance of each ad and then you can identify the ones that are generating more clicks and making you more money.
When you finish setting up, you you can start placing ads on your website or blog. The way you place and format your ads will depend on what type of site you have and the goals you hope to achieve with them.
As you pick out ad units, ensure that you place them in areas where visitors are likely to see them without distracting from other content on the page. You should also try out various sizes and formats of ad units that are visually appealing while still being effective at catching your readers’ attention.
When you set everything up correctly, you can then monitor how much money you’re making through Google AdSense.
Always analyze how each ad unit is performing to determine which ones are generating the most clicks, and revenue. You can also experiment with different formats and sizes until you find one that works for your needs.
That includes changing placement positions or even removing the underperforming ads entirely.
Making money online with Google AdSense is not complicated if you follow these simple steps and pay attention to detail. With that, you can start successfully earning an income through the popular platform.

How to Get Started on Google AdSense
As we said, signing up for Google AdSense is the first step and it is fairly simple and straightforward.
You need to have two things to create an AdSense account:
- A Google Account: You need to have an account that you use for Google services like Gmail. If you don’t have that, the first step will be to create a Google Account.
- Unique Content: You need to have a site, blog or other original content that you own and that complies with the AdSense policies. Your site doesn’t have to be ready to be allowed to create an AdSense account, so that shouldn’t stop you from creating one.
The page where you start the process looks like this:
As you can see, you have to share details about your payment country/territory.
You will also be requested to accept the terms and conditions and when you do, you will be redirected to a dashboard that looks like this:
If you are using Blogger or YouTube (which are also owned by Alphabet and are considered AdSense partners), you should sign up for AdSense via your account on these platforms because the process you will follow will be different.
Here is how you set up on Blogger and how you set up on YouTube to monetize YouTube videos (follow those links for guidance).
The next step is activating your AdSense account. For that you have to share payment details and connect your site to AdSense.
Regarding the payment details, you need to provide your phone number and the mailing address associated with your bank account to get paid.
The payment details and website will have be reviewed to check whether they comply with AdSense policies. It normally takes a few days to get your Google AdSense account approved but that can extend to 2 to 4 weeks.
Once they are done reviewing it, they will send you an email.
With an activated AdSense account, you can now show ads on your site, blog, or YouTube channel.

The Various Ways of Making Money with Google AdSense
There are different ways for you to monetize your site. The most popular one is cost per click (CPC) ads that pay you a certain amount of money for each ad click. The other is cost per mille (CPM) ads.
The payout rate varies but Google AdSense enables you to customize your settings so that you can get more targeted and higher paying ads.
Here are the ways you can monetize content:
Cost per Click
Cost-per-click (CPC) ads are an advertisement format that pays you each time a user clicks on the ad.
This type of advertising is suited to websites and blogs that have high clickthrough rates (CTR) because the earnings potential is directly proportional to the number of users who interact with the ad.
CPC ads require user interaction to generate revenue so you need to get more visitors to click on the ad in order to realize any return on investment. Fortunately, Google AdSense has customized settings so that you can optimize your ads according to visitor data and target more relevant and higher paying advertisements.
Cost per mille
Cost-per-mille (CPM) ads pay you for every 1,000 impressions the ad receives. This type of advertising, just like CPC, is ideal for websites and blogs with high traffic because the earnings potential is directly proportional to the number of visitors.
However, unlike cost per click (CPC) ads, CPM ads don’t require any user interaction or click in order to generate revenue.
They make money based on how many times they are viewed. Therefore, they tend to be used as a secondary form of monetization after CPC ads have been exhausted because of their relatively low payout rate per impression.
You can optimize your ads according to visitor data and target more relevant and higher paying advertisements just like in CPC.
Cost per Click or Cost per mille which one is better?
Cost-per-click (CPC) and cost-per-mille (CPM) ads have one key difference: CPC ads require user interaction to generate revenue whereas CPM ads don’t. With CPM ads, you get paid based on ad impressions.
AdSense displays the ad that is likely to earn you more money if you use Auto Ads.
When it comes to income potential, CPC ads have a much higher earning capacity because they pay out based on each individual click. CPM ads, on the other hand, will offer a much lower payout rate per impression.
You make more money with CPC ads in the short term but CPM ads serve as a better long-term monetization solution due to their steady income flow regardless of visitor activity.

AdSense For Video (AFV)

- Video (linear): This is a video ad that appears before, during, and after the video. They are also referred to as pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll ads respectively.
- Standard: Non-skippable video ads also placed in pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll slots.

Using video search ads allows you to increase your earnings potential as the ads are generally higher paying than static display ads, particularly on high engagement pages. On top of that, you can optimize your ads according to visitor data and target more relevant and higher paying ads.
In-feed Ads
In-feed ads are an advertisement format that enables you to display advertisements directly within the content of your website in your feeds (hence the name). They are native meaning you can customize them to match the look and feel of your content.
A feed can be list of news or articles or a list of products or services.
You place them at the beginning or end of your feed or amongst the content of your feed and your audience will encounter them as they scroll.
The ads can be tailored to different user interests and preferences, and can be used to target specific keywords and phrases.
You can use in-feed ads to increase your earnings potential as they pay more than static display ads. You can optimize them based on visitor data to target more relevant and higher paying advertisements.
Auto Ads
Auto ads is a feature that automates the process of placing ads on your site. It scans your site and automatically place ads where they’re likely to perform well and potentially earn more revenue.
Auto ads simplify the set up process for you because all you need to do is place one piece of code on all pages across your site.
Search Boxes
Search Boxes are a part of the search engine you insert in your site using AdSense that allow visitors to quickly search for related topics on Google directly from your website page, making it easier for them to find what they’re looking for.

How to link AdSense with Google Analytics
You should link Google AdSense and Google Analytics to gain valuable insights about your website, such as how visitors are interacting with your ads and which ads are performing best.
To link your AdSense account to your Google Analytics account, visit the Admin tab in both accounts.
Select the “Linked Accounts” tab from the left-hand menu of your Analytics dashboard, followed by clicking on “+ Link Account” and selecting “AdSense” from the dropdown menu.
Having linked them, you can track how well each ad format is performing through analytics reports such as Site Usage and Performance Reports. By monitoring these analytics reports regularly, you can gain invaluable insights on how to best optimize your website’s performance to maximize earnings potential.
