DALL·E 2 Ai: What Is It & How To Use It?

DALL·E 2 by OpenAI is arguably the most famous AI art generator we have now because it allows you to create images of practically anything you can imagine by describing it with a text description.

The platform has been getting a lot of attention of late along with chatGPT, an AI-powered text generator by OpenAI that has also been producing mind-boggling results.

Now that the beta version of DALL·E 2 is open to everyone, we will take a closer look at how to use DALL·E 2 and how you can access it.

What is DALL·E 2?

DALL·E 2 is an AI art generator that uses text descriptions to create art. It relies on a new AI system that creates images from scratch. It is owned by the artificial intelligence company Open AI. It can create new art from scratch, edit existing work, or generate variations of existing work.

AI is already being used to write blog posts and copy so it is not surprising that it has extended into art too.

Its machine learning model relies on a database of 650 million image and caption combinations.

DALL·E 2 is the second version of the tool. The first version, DALL·E 1, and it seems to be a major improvement on it. DALL·E 1 produced grainy images as you can see in the example below (taken from the OpenAI official website):

DALL·E 1 vs DALL·E 2

DALL·E 2 was launched in April 2022 and it was controversial because given how accurately it generated images, people feared it could be misused to create fake images that would get passed off as real.

Artists also feared for their jobs because as we’ve seen in other industries, when a machine does a human’s job as well if not better than humans, it usually replaces them. But where some artists saw a threat, others saw an opportunity to make the AI work for them.

When DALL-E 2 was released, access was limited for the first few months, and there was a long waiting list. Access was free but you had to wait. Then in September 2022, they opened it up to the public and anyone can now sign up for it. DALL·E 2 started using a credit system that we’ll cover later in this piece.

How to use DALL·E 2

You can use DALL·E 2 on your web browser or on an app if you integrate the API. The signing up process is pretty standard and once you’ve confirmed your details, you can start using it.

You are given 50 free credits to experiment with the tool. It is a kind of trial arrangement. Every month after the first month, you get 15 free credits. If you exhaust them, you can buy more.

How to use DALL-E 2

You can use it in various ways:

1) Generate a new image from a text description

All you have to do is type a description of what you want in the text box and click ‘generate’. DALL·E 2 will create four 1024×1024 images representing what you wrote. You can adjust the description to get a more preferred outcome.

You can download the image by clicking the arrow in the top right of the image. You can also edit the image.

2) Upload an image and edit it

You can upload an image from your phone or computer.

Once you do that, the image will be cropped to a square and once you’ve uploaded the image you want to use, you can have DALL-E 2 create its own variations of the image or you can edit it.

3) Using the outpainting feature

You can use DALL-E 2 outpainting to expand an image you have uploaded and the AI will try to match the style to the original image. You can use outpainting with a generated image created in DALL-E 2 itself too.

To activate this feature drag the corner of the image to reduce its size in the generation frame. Write a prompt and DALL-E 2 will fill the frame with something that should match your image.

How to write accurate descriptions for DALL-E 2

While it sounds easy and straightforward, writing good descriptions that get you the image that you want can be tricky. If you don’t provide enough detail within the 400 characters you will get terrible results. The more details you can squeeze into that description, the better. Some of the details you can focus on are:

  • Image background. Describe it in detail otherwise you will get a blank background (unless that’s what you are aiming for).
  • Art style of the image.
  • Mood of the image. For example, bright or dark.

Fortunately, you can edit the prompt and try again after the first results, but know that each edit will cost you a credit.

Editing DALL·E 2 images

If the DALL·E 2 AI fails to give you the results you wanted the first time, you can edit the images by writing new prompts for specific elements within them.

AI image generators often struggle with human faces and bodies and DALL·E 2 is no different. If you want to improve the images you have created in DALL·E 2 beyond what’s possible on the platform, you can use a more conventional image editing software like Photoshop. For example, you can fix human faces with Photoshop’s Filters.

DALL·E 2 doesn’t also create images that are big enough to print at large sizes. If you want to print the image in a large size, you can upscale your image in another program.

DALL·E 2 Pricing

DALL-E 2 is free for the first 50 credits and the first 15 monthly credits. You can use the 50 free credits that you get to generate, edit or create a variation of an image. There are usually four 1024 X 1024-pixel images for the cost of one credit.

When you exhaust your free credits, you have to buy them at a price of $15 for 115 credits (enough to generate 460 1024 X 1024-pixel images). OpenAI has programs to offer financial assistance to artists who cannot afford that.

Alternatives to DALL·E 2

There are several free AI art generators available besides DALL·E 2 that have good reviews. There’s one platform called Art Breeder-Collages that is currently in beta, a DALL-E mini version called Craiyon, and Stable Diffusion, which is open source.

Frequently Asked Questions About DALL·E 2

Is there Content moderation on DALL·E 2?

All forms of social media nowadays has to come to grips with the question of moderation.

OpenAI has had to deal with this on its platform because its product can be used to generate images that create fake news or that could be used for blackmail. Therefore, it has responded by saying that it will effect changes in its policies and advances to mitigate “bias and toxicity” in images generated by the platform.

OpenAI released a statement saying that it will push DALL·E 2 to generate images of people that “more accurately reflect the diversity of the world’s population” if race or gender is not specified in the text prompt. It also intends to ensure that the platform rejects image uploads that contain realistic-looking human faces or the likeness of public figures, such as politicians and celebrities.

OpenAI doesn’t want DALL·E 2 to be used to create realistic images that could cause harm. this includes images showing self-harm, hateful symbols or illegal acts. It has algorithms and human monitoring systems to prevent this and prevent DALL·E 2 from memorizing faces that appear a lot online. However, it recognizes that there’s more work to be done in this area.

Can you tell if an image was generated by DALL·E 2?

DALL·E 2 creations contain a signature that looks like a row of coloured squares at the bottom right of the image. You can crop this.

Is DALL·E 2 available for commercial use?

OpenAI had at first prohibited commercial use of images generated by DALL·E 2, but in the beta version, it allows “full usage rights” for images created with the platform. This means that you get the right to sell and reprint images and to use them on merchandise.

That being said, there are concerns about the copyright implications of training an AI model on existing images. Getty Images restricted the use of AI content on its stock image library due to copyright issues and there has been a push for specific legislation to take care of this and eliminate the confusion this has caused.

How to remove the DALL-E 2 watermark

When you generate an image in DALL-E 2, it will have the colour swath watermark in the bottom right of the image. You may have to remove that if you want to use the image commercially. OpenAI is okay with this.

So, how do you go about removing the watermark? You can do that easily with any app with an object removal, clone stamp or content-aware fill tool. A good example of this is Photoshop. You can also download the image without the watermark by right clicking the image, choosing ‘Inspect’ and then looking for the windows.net URL. The image link you get will not contain the watermark. On mobile you can tap and hold the image and click ‘save image’.

Bottom Line

Many artists and members of the public have concerns about AI image generators. People fear that these tools could be misused because it will become harder to distinguish between images created using them and reality and such confusion can lead to fake news.

Most people are worried that they could be used to create violent images or non-consensual porn. OpenAI says that it is working to avoid this and continues to learn from real-world use while the program remains in beta.

Artists and people who earn their living off of selling their art are concerned about what AI image generators mean for the future of creative jobs. DALL-E 2 is currently not equipped to put any artists out of work and there may be potential for creatives to make the tool work for them. However, this may change in the future.
