Early life
Eminem is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Eminem’s real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III and he was born on October 17th, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Eminem’s parents are Marshall Bruce Mathers JR and Deborah Rae who separated soon after. He was their only child.
Marshall Mathers lived with his mother after his birth parents separated which was a very traumatic experience for a young Eminem.
Deborah struggled financially but she tried her best to raise him which meant moving from one place to another in search of odd jobs mostly in Detroit and Missouri. They also stayed with relatives from time to time.
Discovering hip hop
Marshall underwent many challenges throughout his childhood like bullying and physical abuse. The disassociation with his birth father and a toxic relationship with his mother led Eminem to music. Initially, Eminem aimed to become a comic until he found a new interest, writing Rap music.
After discovering hip hop, he routinely listened to hip-hop tracks especially a record called “Reckless” which featured Ice-T, his idol. This marked the beginning of an era of the up-and-coming music mogul we all know today. Since Eminem was detached from his father at a very young age, he was fond of mum’s half brother, Ronnie Polkingham, whom he saw as a father figure in his life.
Fortunately, he had support from his uncle and Eminem saw him as his mentor. Marshall Mathers interest in becoming a comic book artist because of his love to tell stories faded with time.
However, he was into writing verses that rhymed perfectly with long phrases that sometime made no sense. The English dictionary became his favorite book as he was accustomed to it when practicing a rap song.
At that time, Detroit was largely populated by black families so Marshall Mathers was a minority. Eminem came up against youth that tormented him regularly but the music was his escape from such adversities. He worked to help out his mother to pay the bills but things were not rosy between them and a social worker was involved severally as he grew up.
At some point, he did not enjoy going to school and contemplated quitting school in the ninth grade. He however managed to go to high school after several attempts but dropped out soon afterward to concentrate on his music.
