Welcome to my review of The Portfolio X Ray.

Tradesmith, the firm behind it, has been promoting it as a trading system that will safeguard your portfolio from market downturns and help you pick up stocks that will outperform Warren Buffett and Bill Ackman; it involves a variable that should help you make the right investment decisions.

If you would like to learn more about the trading system, you will find this review to be useful because, in it, I give you an overview of how it works.

Introduction to The Portfolio X Ray

The pitch titled The Portfolio X-Ray features Keith Kaplan (hosted by Justin Denk). Its premise is a trading system that goes by the same name and the newsletter they are promoting, TradeStops.

The Portfolio X Ray (the system) centers on a “hidden stock variable” that enables you to know whether a stock will earn you returns and when you should close your positions for optimal returns.

The “hidden stock variable” in question here is volatility.

Volatility is not a new concept, as Keith implies here, because in a year best known for its volatility, investors are taking it very seriously.

The Portfolio X Ray

The way Keith uses it, however, may be what sets him apart. As the pitch wears on, he tells us that he has found a way to know:

  • Whether a stock is a bad buy or is set to earn you a good gain.
  • When it’s the right time to sell your stock holdings.
  • Whether you should re-purchase a stock you had offloaded and when you should do that.
  • How to react to a probable black swan event such as a crash or a market pull-back.

He says that his method enabled him to adjust his positions when it alerted him in late February and early March that the economy would tank and then recover quickly.

Who Is Behind The Portfolio X Ray?

Keith Kaplan is the CEO of TradeSmith.

TradeSmith is a boutique investment research firm that purports to provide individual investors with “hedge-fund level insights” to help them make the most of their investments. It works much like firms like InvestorPlace and The Oxford Club.

It has been around for more than fifteen years and is said to have helped 50,000 investors make better decisions in the market. The firm currently tracks assets worth more than $20 billion.

Keith Kaplan and his colleagues have been featured on mainstream financial media platforms like Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Forbes.

Keith has a background in software and is known to rely on technical tools to analyze the market.

How Does The Portfolio X Ray Work?

The Portfolio X Ray is an algorithm that utilizes a set of tools to navigate the market and help Keith and his followers make sense of it.

During the pitch, they only mentioned three (and insisted that there were others):

  1. Trailing stops
  2. The position size calculator
  3. The stock state indicator

The trailing stop he uses is a modified stop order that protects your returns and keeps the position open as long as the asset is moving in the desirable direction.

To get the most out of it, you have to set optimal limits without letting sentiment (your emotions) factor in. That’s where volatility comes in as he has a volatility indicator that assigns a number to each stock. This number is called the Volatility Quotient (VQ). It doesn’t rate all stocks the same because Keith caters for the idiosyncrasies between the companies in various sectors.

The stock state indicator lets you know when to re-enter a trade that you had previously closed out if it becomes profitable again. Keith has a color system that works like this: green-sell, yellow-caution, and red-sell.

The position size indicator indicates how many shares of a company you should buy.

The Portfolio X-Ray also tries to predict black swan events (these are events that drastically affect your investments eg. the pandemic).

To give you access to all that, Keith runs a premium investment advisory service called TradeStops.

If you decide to sign up for it, you get:

  • Email alerts whenever the system determines whether a stock is in buy or sell mode. You can also get text alerts.
  • Re-entry alerts. These are derived from the stock state indicator described above.
  • Training videos and a quick start guide to acclimatize you with how the whole thing works.
  • Access to special team member to walk you through how the system works.

Is The Portfolio X Ray Legit?

The Portfolio X Ray is a legit presentation.

Through it, Keith Kaplan presents us with a trading system, aptly called The Portfolio X Ray, that uses volatility to create an algorithm that tries to time he market.

Although it may work, there is no guarantee that it will always be spot on.

It also helps that the pitch was published by someone who has enough credibility to be featured by mainstream financial media outlets as a commentator.

The Portfolio X Ray Verdict

The Portfolio X Ray is presented to us as a trading system that makes use of volatility to help us find the best times to sell or buy securities (effectively market timing).

Great as that sounds, market timing is regarded by some as a fool’s errand because it is rather tough to pull off consistently. That does not imply that Keith is pulling wool over our eyes, it means that we should be careful while implementing his advice.

That being said, even though his system is not 100% accurate, if you are well informed, it should complement you and present to you ideas worth pondering.
