In this 2020 review of Casey Research, I take a closer look at the various services published under its banner, the experts who offer those services, and what I like and don’t like about the firm in general.

Introduction to Casey Research

Casey Research is an investment research company that has been around for more than 25 years. It was started by Doug Casey and a team of analysts.

In that sense, it is a bit like Dent Research, which was started by Harry Dent or Bonner & Partners, which was started by Bill Bonner.

Doug and his team of experts advise individual investors on the best way to handle their investments to enable them to achieve their financial goals. Through its editors and financial analysts, it perpetuates investment strategies that in most cases have been tried and tested and proven to be effective in real-life scenarios.

Its contributors are industry experts or well-connected and experienced analysts who bring strategies that are used by Wall Street investors to the masses.

At Casey Research, the emphasis is on investments in trends that are likely to yield disproportionately large returns down the line rather than the predictable investments with meager gains that a majority of traders take on.

The team scours the markets looking for opportunities that are unintentionally created by governments that interfere with the free market to “fix” a situation or for any other reason.

Note that on the website they have stated that they believe in free markets but will not hesitate to exploit an opportunity created by government intervention.

Premium Services offered by Casey Research

Casey Report

Casey Report is the flagship investment advisory offered by Doug Casey. Every month, he and his team of analysts provide his readers with investment ideas in real estate, commodities, currencies, stocks, and bonds.

He and his team do the research and leverage their network of well-connected contacts to find hidden investment openings.

To their credit, they have got a few calls correct and helped readers make massive returns. He has also helped his readers avoid financial annihilation during financial crises.

Crisis Investing

As the name suggests, Crisis Investing by Nick Giambruno is all about finding opportunities that no one else wants to be involved with as long as they have a huge upside. Part of his service is also teaching you how to maximize your financial freedom and protect your assets.

International Speculator

The International Speculator by Dave Forest deals with investing in commodities. Dave canvases the markets looking for investment opportunities around the world.

He and his team set out every month to find undervalued explorers and mining stocks.

E.B. Tucker’s Strategic Investor

This service is predicated on four steps to help investors make the most of their investments:

These points are based on what Doug Casey wrote in his bestselling book, Strategic Investing. However, they have been adapted to the modern market to enable investors to make the most out of their money.

E.B. Tucker’s Strategic Trader

This service rests on the fact that E.B. Tucker has developed a system that will enable investors to make the most of their investments regardless of what happens in the markets.

He wants to help you be selective in your investments and give you many ways to profit. He wants you to think more strategically and avoid being passive so as not to miss out on the biggest openings.

Casey Platinum

Casey Platinum is a lifetime membership plan that gives you access to everything that Casey Research publishes for life. It is the most exclusive membership deal they have on offer.

It spans the entirety of their menu and helps you save money on subscription fees.

It works like other similar services offered by other publishers like Palm Beach Infinity and “Infinity Circle” from St. Paul Research.

Who are the editors at Casey Research

Doug Casey

Doug Casey, after whom Casey Research is named, is a speculator and a bestselling author who is considered one of the leading experts in natural resource investments.

He once wrote a book called Crisis Investing that made it to the top of the New York Times Bestseller list in 1980 and stayed there for several weeks. It sold 438,640 copies.

His other books like Strategic Investing, The International Man, Totally Incorrect, and Right on the Money have each done well and sold thousands of copies.

Doug has been featured on numerous radio and TV shows where he discusses investing, particularly in the natural resource industry.

David Forest

David “Dave” Forest is a geologist who spent 20 years working professionally for mining and petroleum companies.

He joined Casey Research in 2004 and has since established a service called Casey Energy Speculator that goes after investment opportunities in natural oil, gas, uranium, and renewable energy.

He has worked for exploration companies and helped finance some renowned resource investors in North America.

He spends most of his time traveling to far-flung mines in various countries in search of new investment opportunities. He teams up with Doug to edit International Speculator.

Nick Giambruno

Nick Giambruno is the chief analyst of The Casey Report, which is the flagship service offered at Casey Research.

He is a proponent of value investing and that is the main theme of his premium advisory service, Crisis Investing. He believes that the best time to be acquiring stocks is when there is a crisis.

He writes about international banking, the cannabis markets, geopolitics, surviving financial crises, and other topics.

E.B. Tucker

E.B. Tucker, like Nick, is also a big believer in investing when there is a crisis. For years now, he has been profiting from the various crisis.

For example, in 2009, he knew that the housing crisis would create a demand for rental housing. He showed admirable foresight when he decided to buy numerous rental homes at low prices and cashed in on them when demand surged.

At Casey Research, he is a senior analyst for Strategic Investor. Before he joined Casey Research, he worked for Stansberry Research for whom he co-edited Stansberry International.

Is Casey Research Legit?

Casey Research is legit. When you sign up for their services, you will realize that the editors are successful analysts with good track records in the markets, led by Doug Casey. They don’t just write what they read in the news; they research the opportunities they share with their readers.

They are impartial in their research and they do not endorse any company because they are not paid to do that.

Furthermore, some have made appearances as commentators on business programs that air on mainstream media channels. This proves that they are capable of providing credible investment advice.

Pros of Casey Research

They only deal with opportunities that have significant upside rather than low-yielding conventional ones like market funds.
Each of the analysts has a unique perspective that provides you with a diverse set of opinions covering more than one industry.
The Editors are drawn from successful analysts or professionals in their respective industries. Therefore, they have a lot more to offer than you going it alone.
The customer support staff members are responsive and helpful.

Cons of Casey Research

Although they take measures to manage risk, the opportunities they deal with (that provide you with large potential returns) also expose you to greater risk.

Casey Research Verdict

Doug Casey and his team of analysts believe that rather than investing in mutual funds or other low-yielding vehicles, you would rather focus on investments that have a significant upside.

A consequence of this approach is that it exposes you to significant risk.

Fortunately, Casey and his team members have taken steps to manage the risk.

For example, they have come up with proprietary research practices that help them identify idiosyncratic risks that are brought about by different investments.
