Who is Emory Tate? (Chess Player, Pilot, Father)
Emory Tate was an African-American chess player who was also a decorated U.S. Air Force champion.
He is the father of two sons and one daughter: Andrew Tate, Tristan Tate, and Janine Tate.
Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate are former professional kickboxers who believe that their father influenced their outlook on life. Andrew once said, “my dad taught me everything. Absolutely everything. And my fighting style in the ring mimics his on the board.”
Talking about his aggressive style, Andrew said, “when I was first learning to kickbox he would get mad at me for having my hands up. He would say I’m not a turtle and I have nothing to hide from. We focused on offense. I still fight with my hands down and head movement. All out attack.”
Emory favored an all-out-attack approach to chess and life and it rubbed off on his children, particularly his two sons.
Early life and education
Emory Andrew Tate Jr. was born in Chicago in 1958. He grew up in a family of nine children.
His father was called Emory Andrew Tate Sr., an attorney, and his mother was called Emma Cox Tate, and ran a truck-leasing business.
Tate got into playing chess as a child and then got into the US Air Force as a sergeant, where he “excelled as a linguist.”
Tate was bilingual because he learned Spanish while he was an exchange student in Mexico. He participated in the Indiana University Honors Program where he spent two months living with a Mexican family.
He continued to play chess and eventually won the Indiana State Championship a few times. He was admitted into the Indiana State Chess Hall of Fame

He won the U.S. Armed Forces chess championship five times. He won his first one as a senior airman, the second one as a sergeant, and the rest as a staff sergeant.
Andrew Tate described him as a man who didn’t need or want a house or a car or a little garden to feel at home. He said that Emory was happy anywhere and didn’t have a wife or a lot of material possessions. However Andrew felt that his father was a genius at chess and at everything in life.
Andrew, influenced by his father at a very young age, won the Indiana State Championship at the age of five.
As he got older, Emory began coaching chess as he was still striving to get the grandmaster title. He was probably close to achieving it at the time of his death. He had a quirk about him in that he hated chess computers and never used them.
Personal life
Emory Tate married an English woman in 1985 called Eileen Ashleigh and had three children with her. The oldest child was Andrew Tate, who started out as a chess prodigy, then kickboxer, and ultimately, social media influencer.
Emory and Eileen Tate separated in 1997. Eileen returned to the UK to raise the children in a coulcil estate in Luton.
